Music and Me

Hi, I'm Ma'Khya (Khya) Sanders and I'm in my 3rd year of college. I am on the Spirit Squad, a part of BSU and First-Generation organizations. In the little free time I have, I like to binge TV shows that I have missed or need to catch up on, draw and paint, hang out with my teammates and friends, play pool, and attend sporting events that are going on. I enjoy watching other sports teams play in their games because it is so different from what my team does, and it is interesting to learn the rules of their sport for my better understanding. I am from Anderson SC., and I've lived there my whole life. I experienced a lot of school changes, so I was familiar with being the new kid in class. In high school, I decided to get a job my senior year at a restaurant my mom and grandma work at, Grace's in Honea-Path SC., as a server and I've been there for four years now. When I came to college, I wanted to go down the art career path but with some time and lots of though I decided I want to own a daycare and incorporate art into it, leading me to my discission of majoring in Child and Family Studies and double minoring in Studio Art and Psychology.

Toosii

When I listen to music, the first artist that comes to mind is Toosii. I can relate to his music, and it is something that soothes me. I like to listen to songs while I read the lyrics to insure, I understand the songs. Toosii makes music that is usually about love, family, and hard times. He explains his experience of living life with less fortune than others but believing in himself and hard work helped him become more successful. Hard times happen for a reason so having trust in yourself and working hard will help you become more successful. When listening to his love songs, it helps me understand how people feel and that even though things can be difficult your never alone and you can always heal yourself from anything. Other songs express the natural beauty of all people and being yourself and being confident with yourself is the only way to stay true to who you are as a person.

Lecrae

"I'll Find You" is a song sung/rapped by Lecrae and Tori Kelly. To me, this song delivers a message to people struggling with depression. We all struggle at some point in our lives and sometimes we feel worthless and hopeless but when I listen to this song there is a message of coverage and high spirits. I would sing this song in my church with the youth group. To the kids, it was just another song that they had to sing in church but for others and me, it touches a soft spot inside because there's reassurance that you always have someone to go to that can help you out of the struggle. When we would sing, I understood that many more people than you think are going through something. People were crying, emotional, and moved by the words to the song. This is one reason I love to read the lyrics of songs. I can listen to this song and feel safe when I am stressed or feel like giving up. Many different things can come at you from all different angles and in many different ways but knowing that you are not alone and there are people out there that can help you, wither it's a friend, family member, teacher, coach, or even a therapist, someone is always there and ready to listen to your struggles and pain.

Lil Nas X

When listening to music, I want to be able to understand the song, not just enjoying the beat and style of the song. One artist I do not particularly care for is Lil Nas X. Although the beat is moving and the songs are catchy, the overall understanding is very confusing and kind of demonic. "Old Town Road" was very popular but reading the lyrics, nothing really stuck out when delivering a message. It was as if there was no meaning at all, or at least none I could catch. The song was more descriptive and a little arrogant. I do enjoy the fun of it and how it can make an audience come alive when it's played, so I don't completely hate it, but I'd personally rather not listen to it. Some of his music videos are very concerning and demonic. I have a very religious background and that type of energy is something I wouldn't want to encourage. Although I can say many hateful things about his music, I do love the fact that he finds a way to express himself and have fun. His music makes many people happy and that is one of the many reasons music is important.
